Canberra, along with its highly collaborative, creative and sovereign cyber network, are at the forefront of reshaping such misconceptions. Although a path to a more holistic understanding of the boundless cyber capabilities in Australia is slowly being built, the journey is far from over; it will take work to shift perspectives and show that cyber security is a truly multidisciplinary effort.

Today, cyber security requires not only technical excellence, but also strategic foresight, legal acumen, policy development, education, and operational resilience.

The global cyber threat landscape is continuously evolving with cyber incidents occurring every six minutes in Australia (ACSC Report 2023). AI-powered cyber-attacks are growing, and geopolitically motivated ransomware is increasingly being deployed.

New vulnerabilities are exposing a multitude of critical infrastructure networks to threats they were never designed to withstand. The Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act 2028 is an Australian Government initiative outlining legislative requirements to combat these vulnerabilities. However, new and evolving challenges show that coding, by itself, is no longer enough. Expanding business capabilities and partnership portfolios is exactly the way to gain the tools necessary to tackle these vulnerabilities, especially as the world evolves so rapidly with LLMs.

As a result, the Albanese Government has committed $15–$20 billion to 2033-2034 to enhance national cyber capabilities, with a strong focus on protecting critical infrastructure (Annual Cyber Threat Report 2023-2024). So, there is no shortage of opportunities in cyber. Right now, diversity in skills and backgrounds is essential to protect critical infrastructure in Australia from evolving threats. In an ever-changing and AI-powered world, a myriad of varied experience and knowledge drives security.

However, many businesses are stuck in isolation due to the myth that cyber security is a monolith; code or nothing. These myths take away from opportunities for businesses to diversify their organisational capabilities through adjacent non-technical services and connect with emerging cyber networks.

That’s why Caberra Cyber Hub's Sovereign Cyber Capability Unlocked exists.

On September 18, Canberra will host a showcase of its most innovative cyber businesses. Ten businesses will pitch their sovereign capabilities and diverse cyber solutions, whilst more will exhibit technologies and services that span the full spectrum of capability.

This event is not just about showcasing technology. It’s about ensuring that every business, regardless of size or specialisation, can connect with potential partners, policymakers and diverse, trailblazer organisations.

If you’re working in cyber, procuring cyber solutions, or shaping the future of digital resilience, this is your opportunity to engage with the most connected and capable cyber community in the country. Learn how you can diversify your cyber organisation's skill portfolio, to tackle contemporary challenges - especially if you have a stake in critical infrastructure.

The world is changing, and it takes much more than just code.
