How did you get into cyber security?
Personally, it was curiosity. I saw a book on Firewalls in Sydney, I had heard of them but had no idea what they did. That book let to others and pretty soon I was applying for cyber security roles.
What advice do you have for those who wish to pursue a career in the industry?
Be curious. If you don’t know something, research it, buy some 2nd hand computers and build networks and grab a book on hacking and go for it. The best IT people are strong problems solvers and have amazing knowledge simply because every time they hear something they don’t understand, they find out.
Does your organisation have career opportunities and career pathways available?
Nansen.io is a startup but we expect to be hiring more staff in 2024 as we grow. We plan on engaging staff for the Digital Safety Audits, where they will be working directly with victims of domestic violence.
This specialised role means we will be developing staff to not only be very knowledge in IT security and spyware detection, but to also have strong empathetic communication skills.
What do you see as your customer’s biggest pain point, and how do your unique products and services assist them in addressing these issues?
The worlds understanding of Technology Facilitated Abuse is in its infancy, even 5 years ago, it was not very common, but today almost every domestic violence case also sees technology used as a means to harass, coerce, and control.
Education and awareness of the problem is a key challenge in the domestic violence support community.
Technology Facilitated Abuse can take a wide range of forms and is increasingly technically sophisticated. Domestic Violence counselling staff do not have the skills to understand and assess these risks.
What advice do you have for everyday Australians about cyber security?
It still stuns me that individuals, Government and the commercial sector pay limited attention on cyber security or worse, prioritise convenience or political expediency over security.
As an induvial pay attention and do the basics, a strong password, multi-factor authentication on all accounts and provide a minimum of information.
