Research overview
The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in transportation has been a huge enabler for service provision by improving the safety and efficacy of transport systems. Provenance, trustworthiness, and assurance of IoT data processing and management are critical requirements for such systems.
We will devise practical solutions that allow IoT data consumers to retrieve and use security-related context information about IoT deployment covering transmission, processing, and storage of IoT data.
Research details
A data stream from an IoT device deployed in a train station may be used by different applications such as traffic management, car park, and security monitoring. These applications may serve separate entities such as the Department of Transportation, Local Police, and the Department of Defence. Each entity may have specific deployment and security composition requirements for IoT data in their systems.
- How can they ensure the IoT data meets their requirement and can be used?
- Solutions to enable data assurance and operational trust for IoT data consumers and service providers.
- It brings an unprecedented and highly granular view to data consumers. This can have many benefits/functions, including compliance checking, operational trust, assurance, etc.
The solutions developed will enable data assurance and operational trust for data consumers and service providers through:
- Access to detailed and granular technical context information related to IoT device deployment, including the underlying infrastructure. This contextual information will comprise IoT data transmission, processing, and storage.
- Provision of automatic, secure, and immediate access to contextual information. The contextual information collection and sharing will be verifiable by the data consumers.
- Provision of meaningful, explainable, and customisable contextual information covering data modelling and reasoning.
